Ok, I've done some more work on FourBanger. It's now January and this car
is the fastest it's ever been. I've had this car faster than 150 mph. It's
scary as hell. But the performance of this car out of the hole is incredible!
I've pulled the left front tire on the street in second gear more than a
couple of times. My MotorSport clutch is holding up great. Good thing too,
cause I've upped the boost to 25 psi. The turbo is holding up fine. As long
as I keep the boost cold, I can keep the timing "Jacked" and receive the
maximum power out of this thing. I've learned that the power comes from the
ignition timing. Sure I can turn the boost up; but if I have to turn the
timing down so it doesn't ping, what's the point? It looses soo much power
when the timing's down. The key is to keep the timing as high as possible
without detonating and run as much boost as possible. Thanks to my intercooler,
it's possible. That thing stays ice cold. My Flex Fan is still bad ass. No
electric fan comes close to the CFM of that fan.
Just a few points to go by.
Well, Here's a pic of my new/used 8.8 rearend out of a '93 Mustang 5.0. I picked it up for 100 bucks. It's a posi rear with 3.27 gear and the bearings are in great shape. My old gear was 3.08, so this was definetly an improovement. I put it in with in a few hours so I didn't even have time to grab my camera to take some reference pics. The new rear end is awesome! This is the one thing I've been missing. I've retained the original 4 cylinder springs. Although my first gear is still too powerful to hook up on the street, I've increased my traction 100%. It now lifts the left front tire when I shift to second gear on the street. It's a jaw dropping sight. You try seeing a street car right next to you leave the light with a wheel in the air! She pulls like a jet car!
Since my last update, I've put a pillar gauge pod on. I mounted my boost gauge in it and am awaiting an air/fuel raito meter for the second hole. It's a nice addition to the interior. I hate to seem like a ricer with a gauge pod on my pillar, but it was free and necessary. It does kinda take away from the street sleeper aspect of my car but oh well. It does make it easier to keep an eye on what's happening with my boost where it's mounted now. I like it.
I have since mounted my fuel pressure gauge on the back side of my cowl hood. I do need to move it a little more toward the drivers side so I can see it better. But it still works and was VERY cheap. I don't know why people charge 40 bucks for a friggin fuel pressure gauge! They think their stuff is made from gold or something. Don't mind the dust on the dash.
Here's my latest purchace! I found a set of "Pony Rims" off of a '92 Mustang that this guy was selling for 100 bucks. It was too good of a deal to pass up. The tires are toast and the rims need painting, but after a nice coat of bright white paint and some 255/50/16's (or bigger) out back and some 205/60/16's(or smaller) in front, this car should look BAD ASS! I checked all the rims before I bought them to see if they were bent. All of them checked out fine. I have the center caps also. They should be a nice addition to FourBanger.
Here are a few better pics of my motor. I'm just using these pics as a
reference point as to how far I've come with this project. So if this seems
boring, sorry.
I've just put new MSD spark plug wires on and they actually made the engine
run a lot better. I have an MSD 6AL box just sitting on the shelf waiting
to go on. I believe that I'll be putting that on very soon also. I GOTA get
that damn fan shroud on SOON! I just have to make a lot of modifications to
the one I have to get it to fit in there. But it's necessary to have a shroud.
Here's a pic of my boost pipes. That alternator just barely fits under that pipe.
I've just been playing with the wastegate reference line again. Well I
was trying to put an adjustable bleeder valve in the cab so I could adjust
it on the fly. I was rushing and not paying attention to what I was doing.
I ended up hooking the valve up on the wrong hose. When I took the car out
for a run, the boost didn't change from 25. So when I tried to lower the
boost with the valve and make a pass, I proceeded to watch my boost gauge
ROCKET up to 30 + psi!!! Just by luck I didn't hurt anything. But I tell
ya, 30 psi was awesome!!! But I can't do that again with this motor. I'll
have to get some better rods and pistons before I go ripping 30 psi passes
off.
I have located a new/used block and head. I plan to stroke this new motor,
lower the compression even more, get an awesome cam, port the crap out of
the head and then make a 30 psi pass! That's my goal for this car. 30 pounds
of boost!!!
